So Much More Than the World’s Best Selling Toy

Most people are trying to get their 15 minutes of fame, but for the reigning Rubik’s Cube World Champion Feliks Zemdegs, 5.6 seconds is plenty.
The 19-year-old Australian native took home the gold this past weekend in Brazil, making him the first Speedcuber to ever win the title consecutively. Widely considered the world’s best based on average speeds for solving a 3×3 Cube, Zemdegs humbly and excitedly kept his crown after finishing with a record time of 5.69 in the final. The boy, who first picked up a Rubik’s Cube in 2008, also holds the world record for the fastest single-handed solving of a Cube.
Personally, I’ve never come close to solving the world-famous puzzle, and until you hear stories about world champs like Zemdegs, it might seem like a very small niche community. But did you know that a handful of celebrities are also Rubik’s masters?
Will Smith and soccer player David Silva can both solve the colorful Cube in less than a minute, and Justin Bieber has showed off his skills on multiple TV shows: he can finish the Cube in less than two minutes. Notorious British politician Ed Miliband is another famous face with knack for quickly solving the puzzle, which makes me think I should start finding some new talents.
