Being buried alive is one of the most common fears on the entire planet, but perhaps the most terrifying part is that it does actually happen.
16-year-old Neysi Perez of La Entrada, Honduras, was declared dead last week after collapsing to the ground in the middle of the night, supposedly after hearing gunshots close to her home. Several months pregnant and recently married, Perez was buried in her wedding dress.
A day after her burial, Perez’s family was at the cemetery when they reported hearing screaming coming from inside her tomb, according to the Univision program Primer Impacto. “As I put my hand on her grave I could hear noises inside. I heard banging, then I heard a voice. She was screaming for help […] It had already been a day since we buried her. I couldn’t believe it. I was ecstatic, full of hope,” her family members are reported to have said
Those at the scene immediately started breaking through the concrete tomb and into the coffin, saying they were astonished to find Perez’s lifeless fingers were injured, as if she had tried to escape from her horrifying fate. Medical professionals again said the 16-year-old was dead, but her family insisted she be brought to the hospital, where a doctor confirmed that she had passed away.
Primer Impacto and other sources have speculated that Neysi may have originally suffered a severe panic attack or cataplexy that would have rendered her unconscious. Her family believes she was incorrectly pronounced dead the first time, and that she must have died again after struggling to escape her coffin.
