Game of Thrones is all one big lie. In fact, most things we’re subjected to in the world of entertainment are lies; hardly anything is real anymore. Before you get too existential, I just mean that pretty much nothing coming out of Hollywood is real these days, and with special effects getting better than ever, the way we approach movies and TV shows has totally changed.

If you watch Game of Thrones, it probably won’t surprise you that some serious CGI magic is needed when it comes to showing us the amazing fictional castles, cities, and landscapes that George R. R. Martin dreamed up in his books. What may surprise you, however, is just how much of the show is all visual effects.

The video below takes us through some recognizable scenes from Game of Thrones season 5 and shows us how graphic artists carefully layer each scene with CGI, working with very small building blocks like actors, a boat, or three pillars to create an entire scene of the ocean or King’s Landing.

Much like the characters, special effects in the show have come a very long way since the first season; it’s almost funny to go back and watch early episodes and see how bad the VFX are compared to today. After watching this video, you’ll see just how much work goes into creating the fictional lands of Westeros, Essos, and beyond.
