Space: the Final Frontier
Space may be the alpha and the omega, but it’s also one of the favorite playgrounds of screenwriters and Hollywood execs. For decades, movies about outer space have captivated audiences, largely because of how little we actually know about the further reaches of the vacuum that surrounds our cozy little planet.
Space movies allow writers and audiences alike to explore never before seen places, peoples, and situations, all the while hoping that someday, these adventures may play true.
Whether romantic or thrilling, space movies are always an incredible adventure steeped with themes of emptiness, eternality, isolation, and glory.
This is our list of the best space movies of all time. To qualify, we only accepted movies that have at least a few major scenes to take place in outer space. Movies with space themes that take place on Earth (such as The Day the Earth Stood Still, Mars Attacks!, or E.T.) did not make the cut.
