Oscar Award-winning actor Eddie Redmayne (33) positively bewitched us in films like The Theory of Everything and Les Mis, so it’s no surprise that he’s been cast in the lead role for the upcoming Harry Potter prequel.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them takes place 70 years before Harry’s days at Hogwarts and instead follows the adventures of Newt Scamander (Redmayne), the man who would go on to become the wizarding world’s most renowned magizoologist.
Haters are going to hate but I think Redmayne is a great choice for this role. Rowling herself is quilling the script (her screenwriting debut!), and when it comes to anything Harry Potter, her word is law. If you’ve seen Redmayne in other films, he’s simultaneously frazzled and charming, coming off as both disarmingly cute and straight up sexy. Classic Hufflepuff!
It was originally believed that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would be turned into a three-part movie, but this week’s press release only stated that the film would be released in 3D and IMAX on November 18, 2016, almost 10 years to the date that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone opened in theaters.
I can’t wait to explore more of Rowling’s wizarding world with Redmayne at the helm.
