I have no shame in admitting that Chun-Li was my character of choice when playing Street Fighter II on Super Nintendo back in the ’90s. Ladybeard, the Australian entertainer turned Japanese crossdressing phenomenon, also shares my affection for Chun-Li, but she’s taken it to an extreme that led her to overnight fame in Japan.
Born Richard Magarey, the Aussie’s outrageous cosplay crossdresser personality garnered him enough fame in his home country that he was urged by fans to set his sights on Japan. His plan has certainly worked.
When assuming the celebrity persona, Ladybeard will tell you that she is a five-year-old Japanese girl who happens to have the appearance of an older Australian man. Her rise to fame started as a crossdressing wrestler whose biggest fan base consisted of Japanese girls between the ages of 20 and 40. But her biggest jump to stardom is for a reason even crazier than wrestling or dressing as anime girls.
Ladybeard is also a heavy metal singer, and she recently signed with a hit Japanese band called Ladybaby along with a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old girl. Their latest viral sensation has gotten over 6.8 million views on YouTube since its release last month.
I guess it’s really not too surprising that such a wild character is a hit in Japan. You have to admit that he absolutely rocks Chun-Li and Sailor Moon, even if the little girl personality he shows off in Ladybaby is a bit unnerving. Even “Street Fighter” fans couldn’t guess why this guy is so famous…
