First Aquaman Photo Released for Upcoming ‘Batman v Superman’ Film

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a major installation in the DC Comics’ shared universe, is set to release on March 25, 2016, but we still know very little about it.

Then, out of the blue, director Zack Snyder tweeted the above image a little after 12 AM ET this morning with the caption “There is only one true King. #unitetheseven”

This is no Entourage joke from James Cameron and Vinny Chase. The photo shows imposing actor Jason Mamoa as a modern, slicky monochromatic and intimidatingly bada$$ Aquaman. This new portrayal of the superhero, who first appeared in comic form in 1941, clearly takes a step away from the colorful, talks-to-animals Aquaman that was easily chided in the past. The rendition in Snyder’s tweet shows someone more flesh than fish, just as powerful and threatening as the open seas. But does does the reimagined Aquaman stay true?

The hashtag, #unitetheseven, is perhaps the more enigmatic part of the director’s surprise image. Presumably, this alludes to the seven original members of the Justice League (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, and the Martian Manhunter). This theory probably makes more sense since the subtitle of the movie is “Dawn of Justice,” a reference to the beginning of DC’s creation of a rebooted superhero universe featuring the League members. Another theory, however, is that the hashtag references the seven seas.

Fans are probably not surprised to see Mamoa, famous for his roles as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones and the title role in Conan the Barbarian (2011), looking muscular and mythical– a true king of Atlantis.

Mamoa will join the heavily-criticized cast of Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Israeli actress Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, and Jesse Eisenberg in supporting roles.

Following Batman v Superman, a proper Aquaman movie is in the works and set to release as early as 2018.
