Everybody knows Tom Hardy from playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. You might also recognize him from Band of Brothers, Black Hawk Down, Star Trek: Nemesis, and Inception, or otherwise as an all-around stud. But could you see this English actor as Marvel’s ruthless vigilante superhero the Punisher?
Well, Tom Hardy can.
In an interview with Collider, the 37-year-old Hardy expressed his interest in playing a role in a comic book-based film or series. In his own words,
“I want The Punisher… I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something… I don’t know what I want.”
He later went on to say that, despite his short stature of 5’9″, he would “love” portraying Frank Castle, the comic book hero who goes on a personal war against crime after watching his wife and children get murdered by the mob.
Seeing that Marvel retained distribution rights to The Punisher, it might make sense to include a movie version as another project in its stacked roster for its franchise, Marvel Cinematic Universe. No doubt that Tom Hardy, who you can also see on May 15 in Mad Max: Fury Road, would add some star power to the film. Other rumors for The Punisher include a potential Netflix series, based on Marvel’s Daredevil, which has met with positive reviews.
We almost saw Hardy dressed up in the superhero realm as he had originally been up for Rick Flag in Suicide Squad, a role which I really think he would have been great in. He dropped the project a few months ago, however, citing his unhappiness with the final script.

You’ve seen Tom Hardy as Bane, but could you picture him as the Punisher?
