Being a human just ain’t what it used to be.
Cyprus-born Australian artists Stelarc has been known for years for his avant-garde works regarding the human body. Most famously, he tries using his art forms to convince his audience that “the body is obsolete.” According to him, given the technological and medical advancements we’ve made, the human body is no longer limited by natural laws.
Among his more interesting choices, Stelarc is actually growing a cell-cultivated third ear, which he had surgically attached to his left arm in 2007. He first had the idea in 1996, but he had to wait nearly a decade before he could find a team of surgeons who felt comfortable performing the bizarre task.
The next step is the strangest yet, and the reason why he got a third ear in the first place. Stelarc wants to have a microphone inserted into the extra ear, completing his transition into a cyborg. He then hopes to connect this microphone to the internet so that people everywhere can be with him at all times and hear everything he hears.
“Increasingly now, people are becoming internet portals of experience […] Imagine if I could hear with the ears of someone in New York, imagine if I at the same time could see with the eyes of someone in London.” – Stelarc
