If you’re under the age of 40, chances are you grew up under the caring eyes of ‘Maria’ on Sesame Street.
Actress Sonia Manzano ushered us into a zany world of muppets where we would always learn something (despite ourselves), and now, after nearly 45 years of instructing generations of American children, Sonia Manzano is finally moving off the block.
Now 65 years old, the Puerto Rican actress discussed her plan to leave the show while speaking at the American Library Association Annual Conference in San Francisco.
Manzano first appeared on The Street in 1971, originally portraying a teenager who worked at the local library. She married her “husband” Luis in 1988, and the two have been running the Fix-It Shop ever since along with daughter Gabi and countless celebrity guest stars across the years.
So much more than just an actress, Manzano is also a writer on the show and has won 15 Daytime Emmy Awards in that position. Needless to say, over four decades of fans immediately became nostalgic after hearing her announcement to move on.
