Based off of anecdotes from John Hughes’ own life, 1983’s National Lampoon’s Vacation marked the start of a series that changed the face of American comedy. Now, 26 years after the last decent Vacation film was made, the franchise is getting a much-anticipated reboot.
Yesterday, May 7, the trailer for the new movie Vacation hit YouTube, and it’s already garnered nearly 2,000,000 views. The film, which is set to release July 31, stars Ed Helms as Rusty Griswold (all grown up!) and Christina Applegate as his wife Debbie. Wouldn’t you know, Rusty wants to take his family back to Walley World, the same doomed destination from the first film.
Fans will be happy to see Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo reprising their roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold.
The trailer, which you can watch below, is good for a laugh, and it pretty much guarantees that this movie will be full of mishaps and some of the classic slapstick comedy that the original films brought us. Towards the end, there’s an extended clip featuring Chris Hemsworth clad only in underwear showing off a ridiculously large bulge. Other cast members include Leslie Mann (as Audrey Griswold), Regina Hall, Keegan-Michael Key, Kaitlin Olson, and Charlie Day.
The best part, however, has to be this awesome nod to the original movie. At the very end of the trailer, they recreate the recurring scene where Clark flirts with Christie Brinkley, who’s cruising along in a red Ferrari. It’s not Brinkley this time around, but it’s a great reference to the original movies, complete with “Holiday Road” (the best song ever) playing in the background.
Watch the original trailer for old times’ sake!
Will the new “Vacation” movie come close to the originals?
