Since its release on April 14, Mortal Kombat X has been a pretty big hit among gamers, but better yet, it’s given gaymers something to be proud of.

Staying true to the long-running rumor that the tenth installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise would feature a gay character, NetherRealm Studios cinematic director Dominic Ciancolo confirmed that the newcomer Kung Jin – an unwilling hero and one of the game’s protagonists – is homosexual.

This revelation comes mainly through the cutscene above, and while it may be completely insignificant to the game’s plot (as it should be), this comfortable inclusion has quietly made franchise history.

In fact, there’s a great message behind the scene, as Kung Jin seems unhappy with his orientation, or more so, how his family and others will react to it. Mortal Kombat OG Raiden places a hand on his shoulder and tells him, “Self-loathing has always been an unfortunate part of your makeup. There lies ahead a brighter path [… Your family] cares only about what is in your heart. Not whom your heart desires.” Preach!

So what if Kung Jin is kind of whiny and emo? It goes without saying that countless gaymers and fans in general are just happy to have such a studly, ruthless assassin on their side.
