Now THAT would have been a thriller. We still can’t believe it, but apparently Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, wanted to play one of the most annoying characters in cinematic history.
According to reports, actor Ahmed Best, who voiced the bumbling Gungan in the 1999 prequel, recently revealed that Michael Jackson envied the role that would ultimately go down in cinematic infamy. Best said that George Lucas himself confirmed that the now deceased singer was interested in playing the part, but that the marketing and creative teams wanted to go a different way.
Apparently Lucas took some of the Star Wars cast backstage at an MJ concert, and when they all met, Lucas presented Best as Jar Jar when he met Jackson. Confused, Best asked, “‘Why did you introduce me as Jar Jar?’ [Lucas] said, ‘Well, Michael wanted to do the part, but he wanted to do it in prosthetics and makeup like ‘Thriller’.’ George wanted to do it in CGI. My guess is ultimately Michael Jackson would have been bigger than the movie, and I don’t think he wanted that.”
Can you imagine? No, really: can you even imagine if Michael Jackson had played Jar Jar Binks? Especially if he used regular prosthetics instead of CGI, that would have been absolutely terrifying. I agree, though, that Jackson probably would have been bigger than the movie itself, distracting us from the actual plot. Still, maybe MJ would have made Jar Jar more bearable? So strange to think about the glorious performance we’ll never see. We miss you, Michael.
