Good news for metal heads!
Did your mom ever yell at you whenever you listened to heavy metal? Did she insist that it was bad for you? Well a new study says it’s actually good for you! In your face, moms!
Coming from Australia is a new paper on the benefits of listening to heavy metal. Scientists from the University of Queensland’s School of Psychology. The two female metal researchers, Dr. Genevieve A. Dingle and Leah Sharman wrote, “The findings indicate that extreme music did not make angry participants angrier; rather, it appeared to match their physiological arousal and result in an increase in positive emotions. Listening to extreme music may represent a healthy way of processing anger for these listeners.”
Thirty-nine people, ages 18 through 34, participated in the study. The volunteers were asked to recall things they make them angry or have made them angry and then either listen to metal music or sit in silence. Loudwire.com wrote that, “…contrary to popular belief, when extreme music fans listen to that music while angry their anger is not increased, in fact it is decreased while at the same time several positive emotions are increased.”
Yup! When angry, listening to heavy metal will help you get your aggression out. So don’t be weary of the guy in the office with the pointy beard and metal wrist cuffs — he’s cool!
In case you are curious, some of the 46 songs used were by artists like Rage Against The Machine, Meshuggah, Metallica, Danzig and Manowar. With most of the songs having violent or angry themes in the lyrics.
See! Look how happy these Metallica fans are!
Good news for metal heads! Pass the Slayer, please.
